You’ve perfected and submitted your resume, and now you’re on to the interview stage of the hiring process. So, where do you go from here? Tim McElhone, Senior Director of Talent Acquisition at 84 Lumber, gives his take on how to nail the interview and get the job.
GIVE EXAMPLES
When asked about your experiences and work history, be specific and give examples of how you reacted to certain situations and what the outcomes were. Many employers use behavioral-based interviewing techniques and employers are seeking real life examples. This helps to determine how a candidate handles situations and get a better understanding of their thought process to ensure they would be a good fit for the position.
ASK QUESTIONS
Be prepared to ask questions about the expectations of the job, company culture, etc. Asking good questions shows hiring managers that you are paying attention and are engaged in the interview. It can also help you to feel more comfortable with an opportunity when you know more about what it entails.
RESEARCH THE INTERVIEWER(S)
LinkedIn is a fantastic resource for learning more about your interviewers. Check out their past and work experience, responsibilities, what they’re interacting with, and their interests. LinkedIn notifies the party when their profile is viewed, which is a great way to let the interviewer know you’re already engaged before the interview!
RESEARCH THE EMPLOYER
Review the company’s website, social media, etc. to gain additional information. It is always beneficial to be able to speak intelligently about the company history, competitors, etc. With a little research before the interview, hiring managers will know that you put in the work to learn more about the company, and are truly engaged with this opportunity.
