I started working in a lumberyard when I was 14, following in my father’s footsteps. Over the decades, I’ve watched how this industry actually transforms entire communities and impacts people’s lives. There’s something deeply rewarding about providing shelter, one of life’s essentials, and knowing that the work we do gives families a place to live, grow, and build their dreams.
Engineered wood products have dramatically reshaped construction since the 1970s, but their roots go back further. In the 19th century, homes were built with logs or milled lumber. Plywood, introduced in the early 20th century, was the first true engineered wood, combining veneers in alternating directions for strength. Glulam beams followed, enabling larger open spaces. Modern products like laminated veneer lumber and I-joists offer even greater consistency, strength, and design flexibility.
These advances allow builders to create larger rooms, stronger roofs, and more resilient structures while using wood more efficiently. Engineered wood also provides cost-effective alternatives to steel and concrete, expanding what’s possible in home and commercial design while supporting sustainable use of natural resources.
Within 84 Lumber, Engineered Wood Products (EWP) gained focus in the early 2000s, with our first dedicated operation opening in Charlotte in 2004. Today, EWP is a key part of our business across the entire organization, with hubs supporting operations in nearly all of our stores nationwide.
84 Lumber isn’t just about the materials, we’re also about how we design, process, and deliver. Programs like 84 Vertical optimize material usage and reduce labor requirements. Our processing equipment can pre-label materials, creating a paint by numbers system that simplifies installation. The result is faster build times, lower costs, and smoother jobsite experiences.
84 Vertical was launched in the Denver market and is now available in other cities, including Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, and Indianapolis. This program extends component services by providing optimized lumber packages through design, reducing waste, improving efficiency, and lowering jobsite disposal costs. Materials are shipped labeled, pre-cut, and ready to assemble, allowing faster and safer construction with fewer jobsite injuries.
These solutions are both proactive and responsive. We anticipate the needs of builders while adapting to market conditions, labor availability, and material variability. By combining technical services, design processes, and processing capabilities, we make it possible for builders to work smarter, faster, and with confidence. 84 Lumber ensures materials are available where they are needed, and our team supports installation on-site. Together, this system helps projects run efficiently from start to finish.
This collaborative approach reflects the culture at 84 Lumber: customer-focused, solution-driven, and willing to explore new ideas. Expanding EWP capabilities in markets like Central Texas, Detroit, Wilmington, and Stockton allows us to help builders succeed and, in turn, strengthen communities across the country.
Looking Ahead
The future of construction is being written today. Engineered wood is expanding into wall framing, treated products for outdoor and multi-family applications, and other innovations that will continue to reshape homes and buildings. These advances reflect both technical progress and the enduring spirit of building in America, from the innovation, collaboration, and the drive to create lasting communities.
Great buildings start long before materials reach the jobsite. It starts with smart design, strong partnerships, and a team committed to helping builders bring their visions to life. As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, it’s clear that the work of today’s builders will leave a lasting mark on the communities of tomorrow.
