When the Salgado family’s Avondale, Arizona home caught fire in the early morning on New Year’s Day, their neighbor came to the rescue and saved their lives. Now, after hearing the heroic story, 84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier, is giving the family $25,000 to help them rebuild.
The happy ending would not have happened without Carolyn Palisch. Carolyn, who spent 40 years working as a geriatric nurse and now currently works in a wellness facility, was up early getting ready for work on January 1st. She smelled smoked, then noticed smoke coming from the roof of her neighbor’s house. Carolyn knew the Salgado family had four small children, so she jumped into action.
David and Nicole Salgado, along with their four children and three pets, wouldn’t have made it out in time if it wasn’t for Carolyn, who banged on the door and rang their doorbell until the family woke up and ran outside. The roof collapsed just minutes later. The whole scene was caught on the family’s Ring Doorbell.
“When we heard the Salgado family’s story and how their neighbor heroically saved them, we knew we wanted to help them get back on their feet,” said 84 Lumber President Maggie Hardy Knox. “If anyone understands the importance of ‘home,’ it’s 84 Lumber. We are thankful for the Kelly Clarkson Show for helping us with this exciting surprise and helping the family rebuild their home.”
The Salgados, who are both medical assistants, lost everything in the fire, including the one car they shared to drive to work together and take their kids to school. The family is now squeezed in with their grandparents, and the kids have gone back to virtual learning, until they can figure out their new living arrangement. 84 Lumber hopes their gift will help them move back into their own home soon.
Carolyn has been recognized by the fire department for saving a life. She also appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show to help surprise the family.
