EIGHTY FOUR, Pa. (Oct. 10, 2019) – 84 Lumber is taking steps large and small this month to help raise awareness of breast cancer and support those who are battling the disease. On Oct. 1, the company switched to a pink logo on its social media channels and also on the dasher board at PPG Paints Arena in honor of its partnership with the Pittsburgh Penguins. As in previous years, 84 Lumber also sold special T-shirts to associates to raise money for the American Cancer Society. More than a thousand shirts were sold this year, totaling about $5,600 in donations.
The building materials supplier also donated care baskets to breast cancer patients at two Pittsburgh-area medical centers. On Oct. 7, members of the company’s Marketing team delivered 20 baskets each to Canonsburg Hospital in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and the Washington Health System Women’s Center in Washington, Pennsylvania. Each basket was stocked with items such as a blanket, lotion, slipper socks, a hat, a T-shirt, and a water bottle. 84 Lumber also had a presence at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Oct. 6 home game, where the team recognized breast cancer survivors as part of the league’s Crucial Catch cancer-awareness campaign. The company had a pink tent outside Heinz Field where attendees could pose for pictures against a breast-cancer-awareness backdrop. Former Steeler Brett Keisel also made an appearance and took pictures with fans.
“Breast cancer can have a devastating impact on those who are diagnosed, as well as their families. Every year, 84 Lumber shows solidarity with countless others in raising awareness of this disease,” said Amy Smiley, vice president of marketing for 84 Lumber. “It’s our hope that by spreading this important message and increasing education, we can finally find a cure.”
